Scientists have developed an artificial intelligence system that is capable of transforming a recording of brain activity directly into digital photographs.
There is one expression that I really like. When we want to point out the abundance of possibilities, we usually say – “only the imagination is the limit”. This means that there is nothing more powerful than the human imagination.
All ideas, innovations, discoveries and works of art first arise in our mind. Unfortunately, in order to turn what we imagine into a visible reality, we need will, perseverance and effort, but also some specific skills. For example, I can imagine in my head an ideal place to rest or a mechanism that would solve an important problem, but I can’t translate that into an artistic painting or a technical drawing.
News coming to us from the research center of one of the Japanese universities announces a possible solution to this problem. Namely, scientists have developed an artificial intelligence system that is capable of transforming a recording of brain activities directly into digital photographs with great precision.
Unfortunately, the resolution of such images is still unusually low, and the equipment needed for shooting is expensive and awkward. It is estimated, however, that the original challenges could be overcome in as little as ten years, as technology for reading brain waves develops.
The software uses a special type of neural network, similar to those used for deep fake effects and advanced photo filters on social networks. Even more – not only is it possible to record what we imagine, but also everything that is in our field of vision.
The experiment, in which subjects were shown photographs and then the system produced images of what they saw by recording brain activity, showed a 99 percent match. This means that our eyes and brain could become an integral part of the camera of the future. There are a number of other possible applications, but also concerns about the potential privacy threats that this technology could cause.
The power of the human mind is incredible, and our ability to think abstractly is the reason for the overall technological progress throughout human history. The same imagination has led to the fact that we will soon have the opportunity to turn everything we imagine into true images that we can share with others and use in our work. I believe that we will be able to use this achievement in the best possible way.
